DIY addicts will relish in these 8 steps elaborated to paint like a pro.

Fend off boredom and restlessness during the COVID19 quarantine by setting up a bucket list of things that you wanted to do but did not due to a well-established daily routine or habits pre-confinement. For those who feel inspired to finally paint this room that you have been putting off for months or years, we are sharing 8 steps to help you paint your room like a DIY pro.

  • Plan your approach: How do you want the finished product to look like? Consider painting a wall in a bold color tone or highlighting moldings in a contrasting shade.
  • Choose your color: Do you want a warm or cool shade? A neutral or a saturated shade? Pick a few shades, get samples and try some tests to see how they look at different times of the day.
  • Choose your tools and materials carefully: A few must-haves include Paint, Paint roller, Paint roller extension pole, Drop cloths, Paintbrushes, Paint tray, Sandpaper, Painter’s tape, Rags, Putty knife.
  • Determine how much paint you will need: the general rule of thumb is one gallon per 400 ft2. You’ll likely need additional paint when going from dark to light.
  • Prep the surface and cover your furniture: Use a drop cloth to protect your furniture; paint will surely splatter. Firmly apply painter’s tape to the edges of the room’s corners, doors and windows casing, and switches.
  • Mix your paint for consistent color: Use a wooden paint stick to stir the paint. If you are using more than one gallon, then combine them in a large bucket in case there is slight color variation.
  • Choose a painting method: Use long strokes in a W pattern for ample coverage. Work from the top of the room down, starting with the ceilings. If you are doing a bold color wall, paint the adjoining light color walls first. Once the wall is dry to the touch, it’s ready for a second coat.
  • Clean up: For water-based paints, clean the brushes with soap and water while oil-based paints require the use of mineral spirits. Ensure that all splatters have dried before gathering the drop cloth and removing the tapes.
